Tenancy Deposit Schemes

All landlords taking a deposit on a house since April 2007 have been required to secure this deposit in a Tenancy Deposit Scheme. The schemes are designed to protect your deposit to ensure that you get your fair share of it back at the end of your time in the house and do not simply get it taken from you for trivial wear and tear issues by landlords who wish to suppliment the rent.

The landlord is required by law to put the money into the scheme and notify you of the scheme it has been put into within 14 days of receiving the deposit. If they do not comply with this then you may be eligable to claim up to 5 times your deposit in compensation through the County Court.

If you believe your deposit is not being held in a Tenancy Deposit Scheme, contact the Guild of Students straight away for advice. They will be able to guide you through what you need to do and will give you legal help if required.
